A Guide to a Poker Party

Before you kick off your poker-playing party at home, be sure about the local laws surrounding gambling for cash. Poker Games without money changing hands are totally okay and even if money is going to be wagered, there are ways to work around this. You’ll want to have a complete list of the number of players you’ll be having over. It’s important to do the necessary preparation for poker parties. For up to ten players, you should set up 1 large table. If there are more poker players, add another.  If you’re throwing a party then you’ll be needing lots of drinks and snacks. A little background music and the right lighting will do the trick. Be prepared – the players will appreciate the ambience and trimmings a lot more than you think.

Right off the bat it’s clear that poker chips and cards will be necessary. Always have enough chips on hand. It is thought that between 70-130 chips per player is recommended. With chips you’ll want to have color/value combinations. Recall that most casinos have multiple denominations of chips – but this is entirely at your discretion. If you’re playing with greenhorns, then use lower-valued chips, but always keep a group of more high-value chips for the poker pros. On the card front, always use brand-new decks. Furthermore there must only be 1 or 2 decks of cards per table. Things like ‘dealer buttons’ are used to keep track of who is dealing the cards – these are useful to have.

Do several trial runs through the game for the benefit of new players. The happier your novice poker players are, the better the overall mood. As you get into the swing of it, the blinds should increase, but not at a daunting rate. An interesting idea to implement if there are 10 – 20 players gaming is a winners table and a losers table. The first 5 or 6 losers from one game will open up a new ‘losers’ table’. This way everyone can feel like a winner regardless of the outcomes of the games.
